Robyn Bennett is an American singer based in Paris, France and she has been making music for a long time ! She writes songs with her partner in life and work, trombone player Ben van Hille, and they perform regularly with 4 other fantastic musicians, usually Eric Delval on guitar, Stan Augris on drums, Laurian Daire on keys, and Jean-Hervé Michel on saxophones (tenor and baritone).
Robyn Bennett started out as Robyn Bennett & Bang Bang in 2013 and recorded 2 cds of original songs (“The Wait” in 2013 and “The Song is You” in 2016). Parting ways with the original guitarist and drummer in 2018, Robyn Bennett dropped the “Bang Bang” and recorded a 3rd cd of original songs, “Glow” which was released in 2019 to critical acclaim.
Her 1st EP “Move” followed in 2021 and the 2nd installment “Feel” will be released on May 27th 2022. You can currently find Robyn and her band touring around Europe (and elsewhere) spreading their groovy, feel-good, retro-yet-modern music. Just try not to smile. 😉
How long have you been creating music?
I have been making music for a long time, but I formed my band, along with my husband in 2013.
Do you have a preferred genre?
Maybe soul/funk, but I love SO many types of music and love discovering new things all the time.
Tell us about your latest song, EP, or album.
“Take It Slow” is the first single off of my new EP “FEEL” which will be released on May 27th. In this fast-paced world where all the information we could ever want is just a swipe away, I feel like it’s sometimes hard to remember what’s really important. Loving, laughing, eating, drinking, spending time with friends and family… and even when we are spending time with others there is so often the need to validate it by posting and sharing. “But if you don’t share, does it make it not real ? ” All this constant flow of information, images and sounds makes it so easy for us to make comparisons, to feel like we need to do more, post more, be more productive to stay in the loop. If you take a break, you might miss out on so much… But what if we just slowed down a bit, listened to our hearts, our own feelings and minds, and reconnected to what we feel, what is best for us in this moment. There is so much beauty and goodness in the world, but since we are so often focused on the screen in front of us, we forget it’s there. You just need to open your eyes and look around.
Are there any challenging aspects to writing and/or recording your music?
Sometimes there are blocks when trying to write music. But slowing down is definitely the way to go to open up to inspiration 😉 Being in nature, being quiet, leaving behind mundane tasks, etc really helps to clear the mind and be open to new ideas.
Has your style evolved since the beginning of you career?
Our style has definitely evolved! We started out very jazz oriented, doing covers of jazz classics and then we started branching out, opening up to different styles like soul, funk, hip hop, rap… We are always evolving, being influenced by what’s around us and what we’re listening to at the moment.
What do you enjoy most about being a musician?
Connecting with people and making people feel things !
Playing live or recording in studio? Do you have a preference?
Performing live is one of my favorite things ! Meeting new people, discovering new cultures, connecting with the audience through music, it’s really an amazing feeling. But I also love the energy in the studio, creating something new, polishing it until it’s perfect…
Do you have a preference… vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, or downloads?
Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?
There are tons of musicians who inspire me. I am really inspired by a French band called Deluxe. They are independent musicians who have really made a name for themselves by consistently putting out great music and really connecting with fans.
Would you like to travel to other countries to perform your music? If so, what would be your first stop?
Brazil ! We have performed over 500 concerts across Europe and North Africa, but South America and specifically Brazil would be my first stop !
Are you currently working on any projects we should look out for?
The new EP “FEEL” is the 2nd installation of a tryptich (“MOVE, FEEL, LOVE”). “MOVE” came out in 2021, “FEEL” will be out on May 27th 2022 and “LOVE” will be out in 2023. Stay tuned !
Is there something you would like to say, that we didn’t cover?
Keep smiling, spread love and good vibes !
