Le Cat

Le Cat is Pete Gum and Zach Taylor. They are based in Los Angeles, California. Past Lives was written in their homes during lock down and was inspired by the emotions of loss, love, our future, and our past memories of life.

How long have you been creating music?

We started Le cat in 2020 but both Zach and I have been writing and playing in bands all of our adult lives

Do you have a preferred genre?

I think our preferred genre is alternative rock, but we wanted to make an album that incorporated our major influences from when we were kids like Joy Division, Nirvana and The Cure. A lot of those bands from the 80’s and 90’s

Tell us about your latest song, EP, or album.

Our latest song “When We Were Young” on our album “Past Lives” was written as a lament but also a celebration of times gone past, whether it be yesterday or 10 years ago. We had a lot of time during the pandemic lock downs to think about where we had been and where we are going. It also helped to brighten the mood to laugh about things we had done in our past.

Are there any challenging aspects to writing and/or recording your music?

Our biggest challenge was not being able to all be in the same studio together writing for multiple months during the pandemic. we were writing parts alone and then emailing files back and forth. It was strange not getting immediate feedback from each other but also gave us time individually to try things we might not of if we had been in the same space together.

Has your style evolved since the beginning of you career?

I would like to hope so! we both have worked with multiple artists and bands in our careers, and I think that has forced us to evolve. we really enjoy being outside our comfort zones and this album is a great example of us having to do things differently and not by choice.

What do you enjoy most about being a musician?

I think one of the best parts about being a musician is working and creating with different people. it’s always in flux and you never really know what you’re going to end up with at the end of the day, but that unknown is the thrilling part

Playing live or recording in studio? Do you have a preference?

we love the process of creating something new and I think that there are opportunities in both live shows and the studio to do that, but our main love is the studio.

Do you have a preference… vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, or downloads?

We’d go with vinyl records any day of the week. As an artist we really hope that the listeners can journey into another world with us and the fact you pretty much have to commit to side a and side b of a record kinda forces you to pay attention and be a bit more engaged with the album, more like a movie.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

David Bowie for sure. I’m sure a lot of artists would say that as well. Bowie was a complete risk taker in his music and the decades of work he left us with has always been for us a pinnacle of what those risks can bring. our favorite album from Bowie at the moment is “Low”

Would you like to travel to other countries to perform your music? If so, what would be your first stop?

we would love to perform and other countries and probably our first stop would be Paris because of our bands name ha-ha

Are you currently working on any projects we should look out for?

We have just started writing again for our next Le Cat album/EP not sure if it’s gonna be a full-length album yet. But excited to be creating again together in the same room!

Is there something you would like to say, that we didn’t cover?
