Neal Rosenthal

In February of 2019, Neal released his debut album entitled The Red Note Project. Comprised of original jazz-fusion compositions that were inspired by his struggles with long lasting effects of traumatic brain injuries along with comforting memories of his upbringing in his home state of Rhode Island.

Since the release, Neal has brought his music to sold out venues such as City Winery, The Oberon Theater at American Rep, and The Triad Theatre. His sophomore release, Blush, was released February of 2022 and features a blend of trumpet, guitar and pedal steel.

How long have you been creating music?

My musical journey started after a knee injury in 2007. I was unable to walk around and my brother showed me a YouTube video “Through the Fire and Flames” by Dragonforce and I said I want to do THAT. Funny how my musical taste has changed over the years but I love it all.

Do you have a preferred genre?

I prefer any genre where the musician’s personality and spirit can connect with the listener. A little bit of everything!

Tell us about your latest song, EP, or album.

Blush is a 3 song EP. Track 1. A Note From Home is a song inspired by the way music can transcend time or place. There’s a note that I have kept from my uncle who has who passed away. We connected through music and when he passed away I listen to all the records that he showed me and look at the note and I would feel that he was still with me. Track 2. Blush is a song about the excitement and journey of love. I wrote it the night of meeting my girlfriend. Mackenzie. This was one of those songs where it was written in about 10 minutes and I was so happy and inspired that it just felt natural. I kept feeling on our first date, “this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing, this is where I am supposed to be”. I tried to write something joyful and triumphant. Track 3. A song that hopefully just makes you smile. It’s a little folky but it’s a cute and simple song. All these songs I recorded myself over the stretch of the pandemic and I played trumpet, guitars abs pedal steel on it.

Are there any challenging aspects to writing and/or recording your music?

I think for instrumental music, the writing process it is easy for me to get in my own way. Sometimes the song just happens and it is a quick and natural process. But more often than not, I have internal debates of questions like: Is this stimulating to me? Will people connect to this? Does each section flow?

Has your style evolved since the beginning of you career?

I started out in a heavy metal band and now I play and write jazz/rock/rnb. I am constantly learning new things and getting exposed to music. That’s one thing I love about this art form!

What do you enjoy most about being a musician?

I get to do what I love and share that with other people!

Playing live or recording in studio? Do you have a preference?

I love both. Live taps into such a euphoric adrenaline rush. Recording music I feel like artists have more access to sonic possibilities in accurately achieving what is heard in the mind.

Do you have a preference… vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, or downloads?

Cassettes feel special and nostalgic and intimate. CDs feel like a soundtrack to a road-trip. Downloads feel like there is an unexplored sea of music. Would love to check out vinyl more!!But as long as I can listen to music, I don’t care about the medium.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

Eric Gales, Snarky Puppy, John Mayer, Pat Metheney. These are four artists I have been listening to recently for inspiration. Any artist that elicits strong emotion and take me on a journey.

Would you like to travel to other countries to perform your music? If so, what would be your first stop?

Are you currently working on any projects we should look out for?

I am working on writing the rest of a full album to compliment this new EP

Is there something you would like to say, that we didn’t cover?

Thank you, I hope you enjoy my music! I am always playing around New York City, come see me.
